Sifting From the Heap

Many individuals and organizations confuse KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), milestones or checkpoints with goals, leading to misaligned efforts and unmet aspirations. Understanding the distinctions between these elements allows for more effective goal-setting and staying connected to thinking big. That is the purpose of sifting from the heap— to determine what is actually a goal versus a KPI or milestone. Sifting from the Heap helps clarify this confusion.

During this exercise you want to think through what is actually a goal over mere metrics or checkpoints. By identifying what constitutes a genuine goal, you can create a more focused and purposeful approach to your unique goal setting.

Review your list from the brain dump and identify which items are actual goals and which are Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) or checkpoints/milestones.

Example:

KPIs: Metrics used to evaluate success in specific areas, measurable indicators to track success.

  • Example: Increasing customer satisfaction scores by 20% in a year.

Milestones: Specific points along the journey to achieving a goal.

  • Example: Completing the first draft of a business plan or strategy.

Goals: Long-term targets or aspirations that drive actions and decisions.

  • Example: Launching a community initiative that fosters collaboration and support within local neighborhoods.
